University of Southampton

Southampton University has a key strand in its University Strategy which is to aim at 'significant social impact locally and globally through public debate, community outreach and cultural engagement'. The University Campus has three high-quality cultural venues: the John Hansard Gallery, Turner Sims Concert Hall and the Nuffield Theatre. Working in partnership with these cultural venues and local authorities, the initiative aims to improve the social and economic wellbeing of the City Region, through a range of projects:

Cantell School, Portswood Primary, Bitterne Park
When: 24 February, 10 March, 17 March
The Southampton University Symphony Orchestra (SUSO) will perform in three local schools to introduce pupils and parents to the sound of a full orchestra. Students at the University have been invited to enter a competition to compose a piece of music inspired by the Olympics to be performed as part of the programme. Concert 1: 24 February Cantell School; Concert 2: 10 March Portswood Primary school;Concert 3: 17 March 2010 Bitterne Park School.

This theoretically-based public art project will result in more than 15 very large photographic portraits around the City Centre, inspired by the Olympic values. Interviews with participants will help develop research by Paul Sweetman on ethics, recognition and visual methods of research. This project explores visions of the university as a creative learning space. Along with other key themes inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic games, the project will look at how space can promote sports and well being, exploring issues around accessibility to sport, the static and unhealthy posture of study and reading. Graphic Art Students from Winchester School of Art will explore the way pictograms have been associated with the Olympic Games since 1964. The students will work with primary school pupils to develop pictograms. The Pictogram signs will be exhibited at various locations in Winchester and Southampton.
