About
Vision
Creative Campus Initiative is a once in a lifetime opportunity to create an unprecedented level of cultural collaboration between Universities in the UK. The Initiative is based on the values of exploration, research, learning and progression and currently takes as its major theme the Cultural Olympiad and London 2012.
The 12 universities that comprise the Creative Campus Initiative share a common belief that the consortium approach can add real and lasting value to the learning experience of students and the cultural footprint of the areas in which they work.
Aims:
- Open up and share the cultural resources of campuses in the UK to provide access to world leading, practice-based research in the arts
- Engage leading artists to collaborate with students, academics and local communities
- Create and present high quality new artworks and cultural events inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games
- Raise the aspirations, skills and economic potential of young people by exploring relationships between sport and the arts in innovative ways
What
In 2010, Creative Campus Initiative commissioned over 100 new art and research-based creative responses works together with critical debate and learning and community projects. These took both direct and tangential inspiration from Olympic and Paralympic sports and the aspirations and ethos of London 2012 and the Olympic and Paralympic endeavour.
Historical, cultural and socio-political issues raised by the Games were addressed by leading artists, students and academics alongside the creation of new learning materials and a programme of workshops with schools and local communities.
A total of 15 London 2012 Inspire marks were awarded to Creative Campus Initiative projects across the region. Creative Campus Initiative attracted 990 participants directly involved in commissions and programme development, production and presentation. Audience numbers during the programme from April to July 2010 were in excess of 550,000. 305 new partnerships were established with schools, FE Colleges, arts organisations, community groups, disability organisations, local authorities, foundations and development agencies.
Creative Campus Initiative is funded by its consortia, Arts Council England, South East and the 2010 programme was supported by Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE).
Next Steps
From 2011 to 2012, a second phase will seek to grow the model by drawing on the excellent cultural programme developed in Phase One and the award of the official London 2012 Inspire mark.
Following an open call, CCI commissioned four new flagship projects and developed a regional professional development scheme with Turning Point South East that will form the body of Phase 2 work.
The projects combine to make a dynamic programme of high quality cultural events and activities that will be delivered as a precursor to the London 2012 opening ceremony, reflecting the distinctive strength of the arts and creative practice in South East Higher Education.
Through the commissioning process and recent HEI developments we have started to develop a vision for CCI that takes it beyond 2012 and into Phase 3.
